I’m a UK based illustrator specialising in editorial and book illustration, beginning in 2003. As you’ll see in my portfolio, whatever I do, I usually start traditionally, working in black and white/greyscale (ink, pencil, Copic markers), then sometimes using this as a basis for further digital work (colour, text, other elements and effects). I am drawn to caricature – for about 10 years I supplied caricatures for The Philosophers’ Magazine – and it seems that even when I’m trying to draw ‘straight’ my work has some element of exaggeration. But it can be fun to play with that, and I feel that some exaggeration is what gives my work character and a sense of fun.
I also have a background in academic philosophy, and there are often literary and philosophical themes in my self-originated work. I’ve taught philosophy and published a number of popular books, and running the two careers parallel, even at times combining them, can sometimes be challenging and sometimes fruitful. My future goal is to combine these two interests in a creative way – an illustrated book or a graphic novel – but I’ve yet to find the right project – or the time!
Recently, I started The Illustrated Book Club, a sort of reading group for classic literature that would force me to do more cover illustration. I think my best work has a narrative element, and I think book covers represent the most intense expression of this – to sum up/suggest the key theme of a book in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing, attention grabbing and true to the text. I wish I could say I always succeeded, but I enjoy the challenge, and would like to do more of this type of work.
