I’m a UK based illustrator, freelance from around 2003, specialising in editorial and book illustration. As you’ll see in my portfolio, whatever I do, I usually start traditionally, working in black and white/greyscale (ink, pencil, Copic markers), then sometimes using this as a basis for further digital work (colour, text, other elements and effects). I am drawn to caricature – for about 10 years I supplied caricatures for The Philosophers’ Magazine – and my work often has some element of exaggeration.
I also have a background in academic philosophy, and there are often literary and philosophical themes in my self-originated work. I’ve taught philosophy and published a number of popular books, and my longterm goal is to combine these two interests in a creative way – an illustrated book or a graphic novel – when I find the right project and time.
I also run The Illustrated Book Club, a sort of reading group where I provide fresh covers for old classics, allowing me to develop my book cover design skills and indulge my love of narrative illustration.
